Freshly brewed Citrus saffron herbal tea.
My days are busy and often feel chaotic. Between daily chores, driving my son to activities, grocery runs and the small demands of family life, I crave small moments of calm. A simple cup of herbal tea has become my go-to ritual for stress relief and quiet reflection. I usually prepare this tea, put on some soft instrumental music, and sip it slowly on the balcony—four times a week when possible. That short pause helps me reset and face the rest of the day with more energy.
This citrus saffron herbal tea is packed with natural goodness. It’s rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals from fresh herbs and citrus, and it can easily replace an evening cup of caffeinated tea or coffee. Swapping one sugary, caffeinated beverage a day for a cup of herbal tea cuts calories and reduces caffeine intake. Enjoyed regularly—two or three times a week—it can support digestion, boost immunity and promote a sense of calm.
Benefits are plenty:
- Simple to prepare and full of flavor
- Natural cooling effect when served chilled

- Supports the immune system with herbs and citrus
- Aids digestion with fennel, cumin and ginger
- Hydrates skin and encourages a healthy glow
- Gently increases overall vitality and well-being
If you haven’t tried a home-brewed herbal tea yet, this is a gentle, approachable place to start. Herbal blends are endlessly adaptable: you can combine fresh or dried herbs, edible flowers, citrus zest, spices, roots, honey or jaggery. Each ingredient contributes flavor and health benefits, so you can tailor the recipe to your taste or what’s available in your kitchen.
I enjoy experimenting with different herb and citrus pairings, but this particular combination is my favorite for a quick, restorative cup. The ingredients are commonly found in most households and the method is straightforward. Below is a clear, easy-to-follow recipe so you can make this at home and adjust the flavors as you like.
Citrus Saffron Herbal Tea
Ingredients
- 2.5 cups of water
- 1 teaspoon fennel seeds, or ½ teaspoon fennel powder
- 4 mint leaves
- 3–4 tulsi (sweet basil) leaves (optional; parsley, rosemary or thyme can be used)
- 2–3 chamomile flowers or a few cilantro sprigs
- 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
- 2 teaspoons jaggery (or adjust to taste)
- Dried orange peels or 2 teaspoons fresh orange zest
- 1–2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1–2 teaspoons honey (add after cooling slightly)
- Pinch of saffron
- 1 teaspoon jeera (cumin) seeds or ground cumin
- ½ cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (or use orange juice as an alternative)
Instructions
- Bring 2.5 cups of water to a simmer in a small pot.
- Add the freshly grated ginger and allow the water to come to a rolling boil for a minute to release the ginger aroma.
- Turn off the heat and remove the pot from the stove.
- Add fennel, mint, tulsi, chamomile (or cilantro), orange peels or zest, saffron, jeera and jaggery to the hot water.
- Cover the pot and let the mixture steep for at least 30 minutes so the flavors and nutrients infuse into the water.
- After steeping, strain the tea into a clean pitcher or teapot.
- If you prefer a warm cup, reheat gently; if you prefer it cold, add ice cubes and chill in the refrigerator.
- Just before serving, stir in the grapefruit (or orange) juice, lemon juice and honey to taste.
- Serve and enjoy — this blend is soothing, slightly sweet and gently citrusy, with a hint of saffron.
Notes
Herbal teas are extremely versatile. Use any combination of fresh or dried herbs, spices, roots and citrus to create flavors you love. If you prefer less sweetness, reduce or omit the jaggery and honey. To make a caffeine-free iced tea for hot days, double the batch, chill it and serve over lots of ice with extra citrus slices.
Fennel and cumin support digestion, while ginger adds warmth and helps soothe the stomach. Mint and tulsi freshen the palate and chamomile provides gentle calming properties. Saffron lends a subtle floral note and a beautiful color. Together with fresh citrus juice, these ingredients create a balanced, restorative beverage.
