Mashed Potatoes Recipe Instructions

Below is a clear overview of the method. Follow the recipe card at the bottom for amounts and full details.

Peeled potatoes and garlic in a large Dutch oven pot.
Step 1: Peel the potatoes and cut them into rough 2″ pieces. Place them in a large pot with whole garlic cloves and 2 teaspoons of salt. Cover with cold water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are tender.

Step 2: Drain the potatoes and garlic in a colander, then return them to the pot. Warm the pot over low heat for a minute or two to evaporate any remaining water.

Step 3: Add the remaining salt, black pepper, Creole seasoning, warm milk and melted butter. Mash until the mixture is smooth and creamy, with no large lumps.

Step 4: Transfer to a serving bowl or casserole, garnish with chopped parsley, chives or green onions if you like, and serve alongside your favorite gravy.

Tip: Make sure the milk and butter are warm when you add them. Warm dairy blends into the potatoes better and helps avoid lumps.

Recipe variations and substitute ideas

  • Heavy cream – replace some or all of the milk with heavy cream for an even richer texture.
  • Garlic powder – use in place of fresh garlic if needed; adjust to taste.
  • Onion powder – a pinch adds a subtle savory depth.
  • Cayenne pepper – a small pinch gives a gentle heat that complements the Creole seasoning.
  • Cajun seasoning – interchangeable with Creole seasoning for a slightly different spice profile.
  • Ground meat – small browned pieces of pork or beef can be stirred in for a heartier mash if you enjoy meat in mashed potatoes.
  • Broth – a splash of beef or chicken broth can add savory flavor in place of some milk.

Necessary gear: Equipment

Use a large heavy pot or Dutch oven to boil the potatoes evenly, and a good potato masher to finish the texture. A ricer or food mill can make the results extra-smooth if you prefer.

I like a roomy Dutch oven for even heating and quicker boiling, but any large saucepan will work. You’ll also need a colander to drain and a masher to finish the potatoes.

More side dishes you might enjoy

  • Crispy Instant Pot Potatoes
  • Cajun Green Beans
  • Instant Pot White Beans
  • Cranberry Apple Rice Pilaf – a fruity rice side that brightens a holiday plate.
  • Cheese Grits – a southern staple that goes with breakfast, shrimp, or chicken.
  • Cajun Cornbread – hearty, slightly sweet, and perfect alongside stews or fried food.
  • Popeyes Cajun Fries – spicy, crispy fries inspired by the fast-food favorite.
  • Popeyes Sweet Heat Sauce – a tangy, sweet-spicy dip to pair with fried chicken or fries.

Mashed potatoes also pair well with classic mains like Southern liver and onions with gravy or a rich Irish stew served over mashed potatoes.

How to store leftovers

Once completely cooled, store mashed potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Reheat gently on the stovetop with a splash of milk or in the oven covered with foil.

Mel’s kitchen notes

Yukon Gold or other yellow waxy potatoes give a naturally creamy texture, so they’re my top pick for mashed potatoes. Finish with a little Cajun-style gravy for an authentic flavor boost.

Frequently asked questions: FAQs

What is the best way to mash potatoes?

If the potatoes are fully cooked, a traditional potato masher and warm milk and butter will produce smooth results. For an ultra-silky texture, a ricer, food mill, or a short pulse in a stand mixer can help, but avoid over-processing to keep the potatoes fluffy.

Should I put the potatoes into hot water or cold water?

Start them in cold water and then bring to a boil. This ensures the potatoes cook evenly from the outside to the center.

Why not add cold butter and milk?

Cold dairy can cool the potatoes too quickly, which increases the chance of lumps. Warm butter and milk incorporate more smoothly for a creamier mash.
