Honey Mustard Popcorn Snack Mix: Sweet and Salty

Salty Sweet Honey Mustard Popcorn Snack Mix — Fast, Crowd-Pleasing, and Easy to Pack

When my father-in-law passed away earlier this year, I was deeply touched by the steady stream of support my mother-in-law received. Neighbors checked in with tea, offered walks, delivered baked goods, and brought dinner. One woman I asked about her connection to my mother-in-law said, “I was her dental hygienist,” and explained that their children were the same age. That simple overlap grew into a decades-long friendship.

That memory has encouraged me to reach beyond my comfort zone and introduce myself to women in my neighborhood — other moms, neighbors, even acquaintances from school events. It can feel awkward at first (inviting someone to meet up sometimes feels like asking someone on a date), but small efforts pay off. Little by little I’ve made new friends, and now I don’t hesitate to suggest a walk, a run, or a casual get-together.

Last weekend I hosted a relaxed clothing swap with several neighborhood moms. I kept things simple on purpose: not too much cleaning, not too much cooking, and a no-stress atmosphere. For snacks I made this Salty Sweet Honey Mustard Popcorn Snack Mix, and it was perfect — easy to assemble, easy to bake, and a real crowd-pleaser.

The balance of sweet honey and tangy mustard, combined with crunchy popcorn, pretzels, and Chex cereal, creates a snack that’s irresistible. The ingredients are simple and pantry-friendly:

Popcorn, pretzels, Chex cereal, butter (or Earth Balance for dairy-free), honey (or maple for vegan), yellow mustard, dry mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, onion and garlic powder, and a touch of kosher salt.

To make the mix, toss the dry ingredients in a large bowl, melt the sauce ingredients together, pour the sauce over the snack mix, and bake at a low temperature until the pieces are crisp and fragrant. It’s easy to scale up for a party, portion into jars for homemade gifts, or pack in lunchboxes for a fun, crunchy treat.

Dietary swaps are straightforward: use Earth Balance or another plant-based butter substitute to make it dairy-free, swap honey for maple syrup to make it vegan, and choose gluten-free pretzels to keep it gluten-free. You can pop your own popcorn or use a plain store-bought variety — I used Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Popcorn and it worked well.

The mix was a hit at the swap, and more importantly, the relaxed gathering helped strengthen new friendships. A line from C.S. Lewis keeps coming back to me: “Friendship is born at the moment when one person says to another: What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” That feeling of recognition is exactly why small social risks are worth taking.

Ingredients

  • 8
    cups
    plain or lightly salted popcorn
I used Trader Joe’s Reduced Guilt Popcorn
  • 3
    cups
    small pretzel twists
  • 3
    cups
    Chex cereal
I used a mix of corn and rice Chex
  • 6
    Tablespoons
    unsalted butter
    or Earth Balance
  • 2
    Tablespoons
    honey
  • 2
    Tablespoons
    yellow mustard
  • 1
    Tablespoon
    dry mustard powder
  • 1
    Tablespoon
    Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2
    teaspoons
each onion powder and garlic powder
  • 3/4
    teaspoon
    Kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 250°F (121°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a very large bowl, combine the popcorn, pretzels, and Chex cereal so they are evenly mixed.

  2. In a small saucepan, combine the butter (or butter alternative), honey (or maple), yellow mustard, dry mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, and kosher salt. Warm over medium-low heat, stirring until everything is melted and smooth. Take care not to boil; the goal is a glossy, pourable glaze.

  3. Pour the warm glaze over the popcorn mixture and toss gently but thoroughly so the pieces are evenly coated. Spread the coated mix in an even layer on the prepared baking sheets.

  4. Bake until the mix is dry to the touch and fragrant, about 30 to 35 minutes, stirring once or twice during baking to ensure even crisping. Remove from the oven and let cool completely on the pans; it will crisp further as it cools.

  5. Store cooled snack mix in an airtight container for up to a week. To serve, transfer to a bowl or portion into jars for gifting. Optional add-ins: roasted nuts, sesame sticks, or a sprinkle of cayenne for heat.
