Baked Camembert: Melty Appetizer with Honey and Herbs

The garlic and white wine make this Baked Camembert appetizer a winning, gooey cheese snack that’s quick and elegant.

Baked Camembert

I am a devoted cheese lover — every variety fascinates me. My husband and children usually prefer milder cheeses like Gouda and Cheddar, but when I serve this Baked Camembert, everyone gathers around. It’s an ideal appetizer for a relaxed evening, especially when shared outdoors with light plates or simply with crackers.

We used to enjoy it by the pool, setting the hot cheese in the center and dipping crackers while the kids played nearby. Recently our household has faced security issues that made outdoor dining less practical, so now we enjoy the same warm, communal feeling indoors. Regardless of where you serve it, this recipe stays simple, impressive, and reliably delicious.

Baked Camembert Appetizer

Author: Linda Nortje

The combination of fresh garlic and dry white wine softens the Camembert into a luscious, spoonable center — perfect for sharing.

Course: Appetizer

Prep Time: 5 mins

Cook Time: 20 mins

Total Time: 25 mins

Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 Camembert cheese round (125 g / 4 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh garlic, crushed
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine
  • 3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Place the Camembert in an oven-proof serving dish. Using the back of a teaspoon or a sharp knife, make several small shallow crosses or slits across the top rind.
  3. Press the crushed garlic into the cuts so the flavor infuses the cheese as it heats.
  4. Pour the dry white wine over the top of the cheese. Sprinkle the chopped parsley and chives over the Camembert, including a little on the sides where the wine may run down.
  5. Bake for about 20 minutes, until the cheese begins to puff and the center becomes soft and runny. You can test doneness by inserting a sharp knife into the center — it should feel molten.
  6. Remove from the oven and spoon any pooled wine back over the cheese. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Spoon the wine that gathers in the dish over the baked Camembert before serving. Offer savory crackers, slices of toasted baguette, or fresh apple and pear slices for dipping. The contrast of crisp bites and melted cheese is delightful.

Tips and Variations

  • For a richer flavor, add a few flakes of sea salt and a grind of black pepper before baking.
  • If you prefer herbs with more aroma, add a small sprig of thyme or a pinch of rosemary with the parsley and chives.
  • To make this recipe alcohol-free, substitute the white wine with low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth, or a splash of apple juice for a touch of sweetness.
  • Adjust the garlic amount to taste. Roasted garlic (softened beforehand) gives a milder, sweeter profile compared with raw crushed garlic.
  • Leftovers: refrigerate any cooled leftover Camembert and gently reheat in a low oven until soft again. Avoid microwaving directly on high to preserve texture and flavor.
  • Oven differences: oven temperatures vary. If your oven runs hot, check the cheese after 15 minutes to prevent overheating. The goal is a warm, runny center without completely melting the rind away.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the baked Camembert immediately with an assortment of crackers, sliced rustic bread, or crisp vegetable sticks. Fresh fruit like grapes, apple slices, or pear wedges complement the creamy, savory cheese and the wine-infused topping. This appetizer is ideal for casual gatherings or as part of a light dinner.

I usually cut the cheese open and fold the rind back so that everyone can dip in. It’s a simple way to bring people together around a shared, comforting bite.
