Valentine’s Day Chocolate Banana Sundae Bites Recipe

I love being in the kitchen with my kids, and taking part in the Mini Chef Monday series has reminded me to carve out that time regularly. Over the weekend we finally had some unseasonably warm, sunny weather and I wanted to make a special, kid-friendly dessert with Wesley to surprise his brothers. We gave a familiar frozen-banana treat a Valentine’s Day twist with festive sprinkles and heart cupcake picks. These Chocolate Banana Sundae Bites are easy, fun for little helpers, and perfect for any celebration.

Wesley enjoys slicing bananas, and it’s a great job for preschoolers. To keep the pieces even, I marked where to cut and let him do the slicing. This helps build confidence and keeps the process safe and controlled.

Freezing the banana pieces for a short time before dipping helps them stay firm and prevents fast browning. We found that 10–15 minutes is enough to make them easier to dip without turning rock solid.

When dipping the bananas, it’s easiest to coat about one-third of each piece in chocolate, then immediately add sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft. Sprinkling around the sides prevents a heavy buildup of coating on the top and keeps the bites tidy.

Wesley loved skewering the maraschino cherries and adding them to the banana after I placed a small dollop of whipped topping on each piece. You can use homemade whipped cream or a refrigerated whipped topping—both work well and add an extra sundae-like finish.

We kept the recipe simple and skipped adding ice cream to the center—some variations do include a small scoop, but with the chocolate, sprinkles, whipped topping, and cherry, the bites were already full of flavor and texture.

These Chocolate Banana Sundae Bites were a big hit at our house—quick to prepare, fun to make with kids, and easy to customize for any holiday or event.

Chocolate Banana Sundae Bites

These easy frozen banana bites are dipped in chocolate, sprinkled, and topped with a dollop of whipped topping and a cherry—perfect for parties, Valentine’s Day, or an after-school treat.

Course: Dessert / Snack

Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 2 large ripe bananas, peeled
  • 2/3 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons oil
  • 8 maraschino cherries, washed and dried
  • Whipped topping (homemade or store-bought)
  • Sprinkles
  • Toothpicks or cupcake picks

Instructions

  1. Cut each banana into four equal pieces, trimming the ends.
  2. Arrange the banana pieces on a parchment-lined or silicone baking sheet.
  3. Freeze the bananas for about 15 minutes so they firm up slightly.
  4. Microwave the chocolate chips with the oil in short bursts, stirring until just melted and smooth.
  5. Dip each banana piece about one-third of the way into the chocolate.
  6. Sprinkle jimmies or other sprinkles over the chocolate while it is still soft, then return the pieces to the lined baking sheet.
  7. Refrigerate for 10 minutes or until the chocolate sets.
  8. Add a small dollop of whipped topping to the top of each banana.
  9. Skewer a cherry with a toothpick or cupcake pick and gently press it into the whipped topping in the center of each banana.
  10. Serve immediately, or refrigerate for up to one hour before serving.

These bites are versatile—swap the sprinkles, pick colors, or use different fruit to match any holiday or celebration. They’re an easy way to involve kids in the kitchen and create a festive, shareable treat.

I hope you try this fun banana dessert with your mini chefs this Valentine’s Day or any time you want a simple, festive treat.
